The Winking Circle Video Zine (Canada, 2006 • 50min)
Director: Benny Zenga • Producer: Benny Zenga

FILMMAKER IN ATTENDANCE

A cut-and-paste video record of the exploits and achievements of The Winkers, a group of Uxbridge teens whose self-described mission is the "eccentrification of the world". They seek refuge from the bland consumerist homogeneity of suburbia through towering art bikes, home-made videos, public art projects, wacky stunts, and unbridled artistic self-expression. The film is not so much one coherent narrative as it is a kind of video diary, vignettes documenting young lives lived exuberantly and joyously.

While the principals have grown up in the time since their crazy capers were recorded here on film, they have not lost the spirit of those times and have passed their unique DIY-philosophy on to a new generation of Winkers. In challenging the audience to turn off their televisions and reject consumerist culture, The Winkers' call-to-arms echoes the Toronto Public Space Committee's mandate to protect our shared public spaces from corporatization. The Winkers recognize that art and self-expression can be an act of political activism without even trying — just by taking place in the public sphere.

KEVIN BRACKEN & LORI KUFNER IN ATTENDANCE

This documentary short profiles local heroes Kevin Bracken and Lori Kufner, the young minds behind Newmindspace. The duo put on all-ages public art events in both New York (where Kevin is originally from) and Toronto (where he and Lori now live). Subway parties, city-wide Capture The Flag, a gigantic outdoor pillow fight, a Valentine's mural along city streets & sidewalks — these are just some of the events Newmindspace has been behind. Often brilliant in their simplicity, Newmindspace events re-imagine the city as a gigantic playground, an immense canvas.
