EUCAN’S MATH IS AS LOUSY AS THEIR GARBAGE CANS
Staff Report: Citizens, BIAs & Residents Groups all oppose litter bin project

Media Release ~ Monday January 9th 2006

On Friday January 6th, EUCAN announced that “Ordinary Torontonians are in favour of new recycling bins being tested on Toronto streets, according to a report released today by City staff.”

After witnessing EUCAN’s apparent inability to design a garbage can that actually works, we are not surprised that they now seem equally unable to comprehend the statistics presented in the staff report.

EUCAN’s interpretation is based solely on 199 street surveys which represent fewer than 5% of the total surveys completed by Torontonians and completely ignores the responses from BIAs and Residents Groups.

If you look at the total survey results, you’ll find that 56% of the Torontonians who participated were opposed to the EUCAN bins.

Furthermore, over 78% of the BIAs were opposed and over 71% of the Residents/ Community groups were opposed.

As well, the Toronto Cycling Committee “expressed their official objection” to the EUCAN bins due to safety concerns.

The staff report clearly states: “Throughout the consultation process, staff heard significant opposition to the newly designed Eucan litter and recycling bins from BIA’s, Resident Associations/ Community Groups and other groups. While many participants in the consultation process expressed their appreciation that more litter bins are required on city streets, there was a concern that these bins were not the appropriate solution.”

Citizen concerns outlined in the report include aesthetics, size, safety, sightlines, access, positioning, functionality, contamination rates, poor labeling and the fact that the 7.5 foot tall Ecomupis are unrecognisable as litter bins.

EUCAN states in their release that they “view the staff report as the definitive word from Toronto residents.” We agree. And we encourage City Councillors to listen.
